GREAT MOMENTS OF FILM SCORING #1: The Passion of the Christ – John Debney

There are a lot of well-written scores for biblical movies (the best ones undoubtedly written by Miklos Rozsa – I mean, just think of Ben-Hur!) and John Debney’s wonderfully crafted “Passion of the Christ” definitely belongs on this list as well.

The composer creates a very interesting soundscape, ranging from more intimate flute solos to heartbreaking vocals by Lisbeth Scott or massive choir parts (e.g. “Resurrection”, now that’s what I call an epic cue!).
From what we can hear, it is obvious that Debney truly put a lot of effort in this score which finally earned him a well-deserved Oscar nomination. LLL released a wonderful 2CD set for this one and I can’t recommend it enough. Oh, and if you ever have the chance to listen to the symphony (yeah, he even turned this score into a symphony!!!), go and check it out – it’s awesome! Well done, Mr. Debney.
